TN VISA GENERAL INFORMATION
TN or Trade-NAFTA: Cal Poly will obtain a TN visa for faculty who are citizens of Canada or Mexico.
NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement. (NAFTA Handbook - November 1999). It creates special economic and trade relationships for the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Description: The nonimmigrant NAFTA Professional (TN) visa allows citizens of Canada and Mexico, as NAFTA professionals to work in the United States. To be eligible, the individual must intend to engage in employment that is on the list of qualifying professions available from USCIS.
Employment Restrictions: May be employed and compensation only by the sponsoring employer through whom the status was obtained. Canadians require only an I-94 card as employment authorization. Mexican citizens require USCIS Form I-797A. Permanent residents, including Canadian permanent residents, are not able to apply to work as a NAFTA professional.
